Overview
X-Men Legends is an action role-playing game that Raven Software developed and Activision published for the PlayStation 2 in September 2004. The game places players in command of Marvel’s iconic mutant superhero team as they battle Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants through a series of story-driven missions. Players select a team of four characters from a roster of fifteen playable X-Men, each bringing a distinct set of mutant abilities to the fight. Wolverine tears through enemies with adamantium claws, Cyclops fires powerful optic blasts, Storm hurls lightning at groups of foes, and Jean Grey crushes targets with telekinetic force. The game sets itself apart from other superhero titles of its time by blending real-time brawling with meaningful character progression. Every hero earns experience and levels up independently between missions, gaining access to new powers and stronger base statistics over time. This steady growth gives the game a satisfying structure that keeps players invested from the opening tutorial all the way through to the final boss battle.
The game supports both solo play and a cooperative multiplayer mode for up to four players, letting friends tackle the full story campaign together. The story spans fifteen missions across diverse locations, including Xavier’s Institute, Genosha, and Magneto’s Asteroid M fortress. Each mission sends the team through waves of enemies, environmental hazards, and climactic boss fights against well-known Marvel villains. Outside of combat, players collect tokens and equipment scattered throughout each level, and they can visit Xavier’s Institute between missions to spend upgrade points, purchase new moves, and access training challenges. The progression system gives each character three separate skill branches to develop, allowing players to tailor every hero to their preferred playstyle. The cooperative mode supports drop-in play, so a friend can join or leave without forcing anyone to restart. X-Men Legends brings together a strong roster, varied level design, and a progression system deep enough to keep players engaged throughout the entire campaign, making it a standout action RPG on the PlayStation 2.
