Overview

ActRaiser is an action and city-building hybrid game developed by Quintet and published by Enix for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. The game casts the player as a divine being known as The Master, who must reclaim the world from the forces of evil. What makes ActRaiser stand out from every other game on the platform is its bold combination of two completely different gameplay styles. In the action segments, the player controls a warrior statue brought to life, battling through side-scrolling stages filled with monsters and powerful bosses. Between these combat stages, the game shifts to a top-down simulation mode where the player guides the growth of a small human civilization, helping villagers clear land, build homes, and push back monster lairs. ActRaiser offers two primary game modes that work together to form one connected experience. The action mode tasks the player with fighting through six themed worlds, each split into two combat stages and one boss encounter. Players slash enemies, dodge attacks, and collect magical items that increase the warrior’s power. The simulation mode, played between action stages, places the player above a growing town where they direct an angelic companion to shoot down monsters and guide villagers in constructing their settlement. As the population grows, the townspeople offer the player new magical spells and items that carry over into the combat sections. The game rewards players who pay attention to both modes, since a healthy town means a stronger warrior heading into the next fight. The soundtrack, composed by Yuzo Koshiro, stands among the finest ever written for the SNES and gives the entire game an epic, cinematic feel that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who picks it up.
