Overview

Midway Games originally developed Mortal Kombat II as an arcade fighting game before Sculptured Software ported it to the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis, with Acclaim Entertainment handling the home release in 1994. The game drops players into brutal hand-to-hand combat across a dark fantasy world filled with warrior sorcerers, deadly ninjas, and supernatural fighters from multiple realms. Players choose from a roster of twelve characters, each with a distinct fighting style and a collection of special moves tied to their fighter. What set this game apart from other fighters of its era was its extreme graphic violence, most notably a set of brutal finishing moves called Fatalities that players could perform after defeating an opponent in the final round. The Genesis port pushed the console hardware to deliver digitized character sprites and a punchy sound design that brought the arcade experience far closer to home than the original Mortal Kombat port managed to do.

The Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat II gives players several ways to play, including a single-player arcade ladder where fighters battle through a series of opponents before reaching the final boss, Shao Kahn. Two players can go head-to-head in versus mode for competitive matches that test timing, blocking, and special move execution. The roster includes twelve fighters, with returning characters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Shang Tsung alongside new additions like Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, and Kung Lao. Each fighter carries two or three Fatality finishers, and the game also offers Friendships and Babalities as alternate finishing moves that bring dark humor to the experience. The stages cover a variety of exotic locations drawn from Mortal Kombat lore, including the Pit II, the Living Forest, and Shao Kahn’s Arena. With a strong roster, plenty of stages, and sharp combat mechanics, the Genesis version delivers a rewarding and complete fighting game package that holds up well.
