Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a platform game developed by Sonic Team and Sega Technical Institute, and published by Sega in November 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis. It stands as the direct sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog and quickly became one of the best-selling games in the system’s history. The game follows Sonic as he races through colorful zones to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from capturing animals and using them to power his massive new weapon, the Death Egg. Players run, jump, and spin through stages at high speeds, collecting rings and defeating enemies along the way. The sequel introduced Sonic’s companion, Miles “Tails” Prower, a two-tailed fox who runs alongside Sonic and can fly briefly by spinning his tails. The spin dash move also made its debut here, letting players build up speed from a standstill. Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds through the Special Stages grants access to the Super Sonic transformation, giving Sonic invincibility and a major speed boost for a limited time. The Special Stages task players with grabbing a target number of rings while running through a half-pipe course. With tight controls, memorable music, varied stage design, and a satisfying reward system, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 delivers a complete and highly replayable 16-bit experience that holds up strongly to this day.
