Overview

Sonic Team created Sonic 3 and Knuckles, a side-scrolling platform game that Sega released for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis in 1994. The title combines two separate cartridges, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles, through a lock-on technology that stacks the two cartridges to create one long, connected adventure. Sonic Team originally planned the full experience as a single release but had to split it due to time and cartridge size constraints. Together, the combined game spans 14 distinct zones packed with high-speed action, environmental hazards, and boss battles. The game also includes a two-player competition mode where two players race through shorter versions of select zones on a split screen.
