Overview
Sonic Team created Sonic 3 and Knuckles, a side-scrolling platform game that Sega released for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis in 1994. The title combines two separate cartridges, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles, through a lock-on technology that stacks the two cartridges to create one long, connected adventure. Sonic Team originally planned the full experience as a single release but had to split it due to time and cartridge size constraints. Together, the combined game spans 14 distinct zones packed with high-speed action, environmental hazards, and boss battles. Players choose from three characters: Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, each bringing a different movement style that changes how players approach each stage. Sonic runs fastest and attacks with a spin dash. The game also stands out from earlier Sonic titles through its built-in save system, allowing players to store progress rather than replay everything from the start, making it a more complete and accessible experience than its predecessors.
The game gives each character a unique set of abilities that opens up different paths through every zone. Sonic relies on speed and his spinning attacks. Tails can fly briefly by spinning his tails, letting him reach higher platforms. Knuckles glides through the air and climbs walls, taking him to routes that other characters cannot reach. Players collect Chaos Emeralds through ball-bonus special stages and Super Emeralds through giant ring stages hidden across the world. Gathering all seven Chaos Emeralds lets Sonic transform into Super Sonic, a faster and invincible form. Gathering all seven Super Emeralds takes this further, granting hyper forms to each character. The game also includes a two-player competition mode where two players race through shorter versions of select zones on a split screen. With 14 varied zones, three distinct characters, multiple special stage types, and hidden rewards to chase, Sonic 3 and Knuckles stands as one of the most content-rich platform games on the Sega Mega Drive and a defining title in the Sonic series.
