Overview

Sega AM7 developed Streets of Rage as a side-scrolling beat ’em up for the Mega Drive and Genesis, with Sega publishing the title in 1991. The story drops players into a gritty fictional city where a powerful criminal organization has taken control, with the shadowy crime lord Mr. X pulling the strings and having corrupted much of the local police force from within. Players choose one of three ex-cops before heading into the streets: Axel Stone brings heavy punching power, Adam Hunter offers a balanced fighting style, and Blaze Fielding trades raw strength for speed and agility. The game stands apart from other beat ’em ups of its generation through a combination of tight combat, strong visual design, and the iconic electronic soundtrack that Yuzo Koshiro composed for each stage. Those tracks became legendary in gaming circles, pairing deep synthesizer grooves with each level in a way that gave the whole experience a cinematic punch that no other console title of the period quite matched. The detailed sprite work and stage variety pushed the hardware further still.

Streets of Rage supports two-player cooperative play, letting a second player join at any time and fight through all eight stages side by side. The game takes players across a diverse set of urban locations including city streets, a beach boardwalk, an elevator shaft, rooftops, a moving truck, and eventually the inner lair of Mr. X himself. Each stage closes with a boss fight, and the game escalates the challenge steadily as players push deeper into enemy territory. Combat centers on a focused set of moves including punches, kicks, jump attacks, grabs, and throws, giving players enough tools to deal with the varied enemy types that each stage sends at them. Weapons like pipes, knives, and bottles appear on the ground and can shift the balance of a tough fight quickly. Each character also carries one special move per life that calls in a police backup strike, sending a bazooka blast across the entire screen to wipe out clustered enemies. The game offers multiple endings depending on a decision players face in the final stage, giving it replay value that holds up well decades after its original release.
