Overview

Vectorman is a run and gun action platformer developed by BlueSky Software and published by Sega for the Mega Drive and Genesis in 1995. The game stars a robot called Vectorman, an orbot worker tasked with cleaning up pollution on a future Earth abandoned by humans. When a nuclear warhead accidentally activates the rogue robot Warhead, Vectorman becomes the last hope for restoring order to the planet. What sets the game apart from its contemporaries is its visual presentation. BlueSky Software built Vectorman using pre-rendered 3D graphics, a technique that gave the character a smooth, rounded appearance unlike anything else on the console at the time. Each of Vectorman’s body parts moves independently, creating fluid animation that pushed the hardware well beyond what most developers thought possible. The result was a game that looked and felt genuinely advanced for its era and stood as one of the most technically impressive titles released on the platform.

Vectorman offers a single-player campaign spread across sixteen levels set across a decaying Earth filled with hostile robots and environmental hazards. The game moves at a fast pace, rewarding players who memorize enemy patterns and master the control layout. Vectorman can jump, shoot in multiple directions, and collect power-ups that temporarily transform him into alternate forms such as a fish, a bomb, or a hover drone. Each transformation brings a different ability that opens up new approaches to clearing stages. The levels vary in design, mixing open action corridors with tighter sections that demand precise movement. Bosses appear regularly and require players to identify attack patterns before landing consistent damage. A sequel, Vectorman 2, arrived the following year and built on the foundation of the original. Together, the two games represent some of the strongest action content released on the Mega Drive during its lifespan and remain fondly remembered by fans of the platform.
