Overview
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation is a classic Japanese role-playing game that Heartbeat first created for the Super Famicom in 1995. Arte Piazza later rebuilt the game for the Nintendo DS, with Square Enix publishing the remake in 2011, marking the first time Western players could experience this entry in the series. The game places players in the role of a young hero who begins his journey in what appears to be a normal fantasy world, only to discover that a parallel dream world runs alongside it. The core gameplay centers on exploring both worlds, solving the mystery of the hero’s forgotten past, and uncovering the true nature of these twin realms. What sets Dragon Quest VI apart from other entries in the series is its dual-world structure, which constantly opens new areas and story revelations as players gain the ability to travel between the waking world and the realm of dreams. The DS version brings updated visuals, voiced scenes, and a polished touchscreen interface suited for portable play.
Dragon Quest VI features a single-player story campaign with no multiplayer component, keeping the focus squarely on the main adventure. The game uses the Vocation system, which lets players assign class types to their characters after reaching a certain point in the story. Each vocation carries its own set of skills and abilities, and mastering multiple vocations opens up combined skill sets that give characters access to powerful techniques no single class can provide on its own. The world design spans a large variety of towns, dungeons, and overworld areas spread across both the real world and the dream world, giving players a constant sense of discovery as new locations appear in both dimensions. Boss battles demand careful party management and spell selection, rewarding players who invest time in building their characters through the vocation system. The DS version also includes a monster-scouting side feature and a small wireless trading mini-game. Taken together, Dragon Quest VI delivers a long, story-rich RPG experience that rewards patient players with one of the most satisfying conclusions in the entire series.
