Overview
Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D platformer released by Nintendo for the Wii console in 2007. Developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo under the direction of Yoshiaki Koizumi and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, the game sends Mario on a journey across outer space to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The villain has kidnapped her and lifted her castle into the stars, scattering Power Stars across distant galaxies. Players guide Mario through dozens of small planets, each with its own gravity field that pulls him toward the surface no matter which way he faces. This gravity mechanic gives every level a fresh twist, letting Mario run upside down, jump between tiny worlds, and swing around spherical terrain. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk control scheme adds pointer based actions, such as collecting star bits and stunning enemies with a spin attack. Critics praised the title for its creative level design, orchestral soundtrack, and warm visual style. It became one of the most celebrated games on the Wii.
The main adventure spans more than forty galaxies, each split into multiple star missions with unique themes. Players race through ice worlds, lava domes, haunted mansions, and underwater zones, all bent into spherical or curved shapes that change the rules of platforming. A second player can join in a Co-Star mode, using a separate Wii Remote to point at the screen, gather star bits, and freeze enemies to help the first player. Mario picks up several power suits during his quest, including the Bee Suit for short flight, the Boo Suit for ghostly hovering, the Ice Suit for skating across water, and the Spring Suit for tall vertical jumps. Each one reshapes how he moves through a level. After clearing the main story, players can replay every galaxy as Luigi for a tougher challenge. The game also tracks hidden Purple Coins for completionists. Super Mario Galaxy stands as a high point for the Wii library and remains a favorite among platformer fans worldwide for its imagination and polish.
