Overview

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a 3D platformer released by Nintendo for the Wii in 2010. Developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo under the direction of Yoshiaki Koizumi and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, the game serves as a direct sequel to the 2007 hit Super Mario Galaxy. The story follows Mario as he chases Bowser across outer space to rescue Princess Peach, who has been kidnapped during a Star Festival. Players guide Mario through a series of small planetoids, each with its own gravity rules, where running upside down, leaping between tiny worlds, and spinning through the cosmos form the core of the gameplay. The title keeps the spherical level design of the first game but adds faster pacing, tighter platforming, and a wider variety of challenges. Mario picks up several power ups along the way, including the Cloud Flower that lets him create temporary platforms in midair, the Rock Mushroom that turns him into a rolling boulder, and returning favorites such as the Bee, Fire, and Boo suits. Yoshi himself gains transformations after eating special fruit, switching between Blimp, Bulb, and Dash forms to solve puzzles and reach hidden areas. A two player Co Star mode allows a second person to grab a Wii Remote and help collect Star Bits, stun enemies, and freeze hazards while the first player controls Mario. After clearing the main story, the game opens up a much harder set of green star missions and a brutal final stage called the Grandmaster Galaxy. Critics praised the title as one of the finest platformers ever made, and it remains a benchmark for creative level design on the Wii console.
