Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, often called Donkey Kong ’94, is a puzzle platformer released by Nintendo in 1994. The game starts as a faithful port of the 1981 arcade classic, with Mario chasing Donkey Kong across four familiar stages to rescue Pauline. After those opening levels, the title transforms into something far bigger and far more clever. Donkey Kong kidnaps Pauline again, and the chase expands into a sprawling adventure across nine themed worlds. Each world ends with a confrontation against the big ape himself, while every stage in between asks Mario to grab a key and carry it to a locked door. The handheld version added new moves to Mario’s toolkit, including handstands, backflips, triple jumps, and the ability to pick up and throw objects. The Game Boy Color version, sold as part of the Super Game Boy enhanced lineup, adds a colorful palette and sharper visuals when played on compatible hardware. Players can also encounter Donkey Kong Junior, who tries to free his father in later stages.
