Overview

Road Rash on the Game Boy Color brings the wild motorcycle combat racing series to a handheld format. Electronic Arts published the title in 2000, and Magic Pockets handled the development work. The game keeps the core idea that made the original console versions popular on Sega Genesis and 3DO. Players race illegal street bikes across public roads while throwing punches, swinging clubs and kicking rival riders off their motorcycles. The handheld version uses a top-down isometric view instead of the chase-camera angle of the home console releases. This shift lets the small screen display more of the road ahead and gives players a clearer view of incoming traffic, opponents and roadside hazards. The combat system remains intact, and players collect weapons by knocking them out of the hands of other racers. Cash rewards from each finished race let players buy faster bikes and climb through the ranks of the underground racing scene.

The game offers five different tracks set across varied locations including coastal highways, mountain passes and forest roads. Players compete against fifteen rival racers in the main career mode, working their way up the standings to reach the top spot. A password system saves progress between sessions, so riders can return to their bike collection and ranking later. The action stays fast even on the handheld hardware, with cars, trucks and cows acting as obstacles that can send a rider flying. Crashing too many times ends a race early and costs the player their entry fee. The combat moves include left and right swings, plus stronger attacks once a weapon gets picked up from a beaten opponent. Police bikes also chase racers who break the speed limit too often, adding extra risk to each run. The handheld release captures the rebellious spirit of the series and delivers solid arcade-style fun in a portable package.
