Overview

Naughty Dog developed Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation 1 in 1996, with Sony Computer Entertainment handling publishing duties. The 3D platformer follows Crash, a mutant bandicoot that the villainous Dr. Neo Cortex created through the Evolvo-Ray, as he sets out to rescue his girlfriend Tawna and stop Cortex from building an army of mutant animals. Naughty Dog pushed the PlayStation hardware to its limits, building a visually impressive game that showcased what the console could do at launch. Unlike other platformers of the era that used a side-scrolling or top-down perspective, Crash Bandicoot placed the camera behind the character, sending players running forward through corridors of obstacles and hazards. This behind-the-back camera style gave the game a distinct feel that set it apart from competitors like Super Mario 64, which used a wider open-world approach. The tight level design, colorful tropical setting, and memorable character design made Crash an instant icon and a defining title of the PS1 era.

Crash Bandicoot features 32 levels spread across six islands, each filled with obstacles, enemies, and hidden secrets. Players spin, jump, and belly-flop through jungles, temples, caves, mines, and even chase sequences where Crash runs straight toward the screen while a giant boulder closes in behind him. Crates appear throughout each level, and breaking them rewards players with Wumpa Fruit, extra lives, and Aku Aku masks, which grant temporary invincibility. Smashing every crate in a level without dying earns a gem, and collecting all gems reveals the true ending of the game, giving players a strong reason to replay every stage. Boss fights close out each island, asking players to read attack patterns and strike when the moment is right. The game has no multiplayer mode, but its gem and crystal collection systems give solo players plenty of long-term goals to chase. Crash Bandicoot stands as a challenging, charming platformer that holds up decades after release and remains one of the most beloved titles on the PlayStation 1.
