Overview
Chrono Trigger is a role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, originally released in 1995. The game follows a young hero named Crono who teams up with a group of companions to travel across multiple time periods and stop a catastrophic alien parasite called Lavos from destroying the world. Developed by a team that included Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama, the game brought together some of the biggest names in Japanese game design. What sets Chrono Trigger apart from other RPGs of its era is its Active Time Battle system, which keeps combat moving at a brisk pace, and its multiple ending system, where player choices across the entire adventure determine which of thirteen distinct endings the game reaches. The writing is sharp, the characters are memorable, and the time travel mechanics tie directly into both story and gameplay in ways that feel thoughtful and well-crafted.
The game offers a rich single-player campaign that spans seven distinct time periods, from prehistoric ages to a post-apocalyptic future. Players build a party of up to three characters, each with their own unique abilities and a set of combination attacks called Dual and Triple Techs that reward thoughtful party management. Combat happens directly on the field map, removing random encounters entirely and giving players full awareness of enemy positions before engaging. The story branches in meaningful ways during a late-game sequence called the New Game Plus mode, which lets players carry their progress into a second playthrough and pursue alternate endings they missed the first time. Chrono Trigger also features a fully orchestrated soundtrack composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu, widely regarded as one of the finest scores in game history. The overall experience stands as one of the most complete and satisfying RPGs ever made for any console.
