Overview

Square Enix developed and published Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, a tactical role-playing game for the Nintendo DS, releasing it in Japan in 2007 and in North America in 2008. The game serves as a direct sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Game Boy Advance. Players follow Luso Clemens, a young boy who discovers a mysterious grimoire in his school library and soon crosses over into the land of Ivalice. The game places heavy emphasis on grid-based, turn-by-turn combat where players move units across a battlefield and execute actions based on each character’s assigned job. What sets this entry apart is its enormous breadth of content, featuring over four hundred individual quests that players can accept and complete at their own pace. The job system allows characters to master abilities from one class and carry them into another, creating highly customized fighters that reward long-term planning and experimentation throughout the lengthy campaign.

The game offers a single-player story mode alongside a large pool of side quests that players take on through the Clan Bazaar and various guilds scattered across Ivalice. Players build and manage a clan of recruited fighters, each with a specific race and job combination, choosing from six races including Hume, Viera, Moogle, Nu Mou, Bangaa, and the new Gria. Each race ties to specific job classes, and the game features over fifty jobs in total, giving players a wide range of strategic builds to explore. Loot collected in battle feeds into a recipe-based bazaar system that generates new weapons, armor, and items rather than buying them outright from standard shops. The Nintendo DS version uses dual screens effectively, placing the battlefield on one screen and character details on the other. Local wireless multiplayer supports head-to-head clan battles between two players. With hundreds of hours of potential playtime, a deep job system, and a richly detailed world to explore, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 stands as one of the strongest strategy games on the platform.
