Overview

Nintendo released Yoshi as a puzzle game for the Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, with later support on the Game Boy Color through backward compatibility. Nintendo R&D1 handled production, and Game Freak helped with the design side, making this one of the earliest puzzle titles featuring the green dinosaur from the Super Mario series. Players control Mario as he catches falling enemies on four stacked trays, matching pairs of identical foes to clear them from the screen. The twist comes from Yoshi eggshells, which act as wild pieces that wrap around enemies stacked between the top and bottom halves of the shell, hatching a baby Yoshi for big points. The simple concept hides surprising depth, since stacking the wrong enemies fills the trays quickly and ends the round. Bright sprite work, catchy chiptune music, and short play sessions made it a popular pick-up title during the early handheld era, and it stands as the debut puzzle outing for the character.

The game offers two main modes labeled A-Type and B-Type, giving players a choice between an endless score chase and a stage-based mission challenge. A-Type runs until the trays overflow, while B-Type tasks players with clearing a set number of enemies under fixed conditions. Two-player versus play works through the Game Link Cable, letting friends compete head to head as cleared enemies pile pressure onto the opponent’s screen. Four enemy types appear across the rounds, including Goombas, Bloopers, Piranha Plants, and Boos, each contributing to scoring chains and combos. Difficulty climbs as the speed of falling foes rises, pushing reflexes to the limit during longer sessions. The control scheme stays light, using only the D-pad and a swap button to move trays between Mario’s hands. Bonus rounds reward skilled players with extra points and longer Yoshi growth chains for stacking many enemies under a single shell. The package delivers tight, addictive gameplay that fits well with the portable nature of the Game Boy and remains a charming early entry in the Yoshi puzzle lineage.
