Overview

Pokemon Colosseum is a role-playing game released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 by Nintendo and developed by Genius Sonority. The title marks a major shift for the Pokemon series, moving away from the bright tone of the handheld games and presenting a darker story set in the arid Orre region. Players take on the role of Wes, a former member of the criminal Team Snagem who turns against his old allies. He uses a special device called the Snag Machine to steal corrupted Pokemon, known as Shadow Pokemon, from rival trainers and purify them. Unlike traditional Pokemon games, there are no wild encounters in the overworld, so building a team depends entirely on snagging Shadow Pokemon during battles. The gameplay focuses on double battles, where two Pokemon fight on each side at the same time. This format adds depth to strategy, since players must consider type matchups, abilities, and combo moves across four active Pokemon every turn. The shift in tone and mechanics made Colosseum stand out as one of the most distinctive Pokemon spin offs of its era.

The main Story mode follows Wes across cities like Phenac, Pyrite, and Agate as he rescues Shadow Pokemon and battles members of Cipher, the organization behind the corruption scheme. Each Shadow Pokemon must be purified by leveling up, using items, and visiting the Relic Stone to restore its heart. The game also includes a Battle mode for offline play, where trainers can fight using their saved teams or preset rosters. Up to four players can join in linked sessions through GameCube controllers, making local matches a strong social feature. Players can also link the game to a Game Boy Advance to trade purified Pokemon into Ruby, Sapphire, or other compatible titles. The roster covers around 48 unique Shadow Pokemon to collect, including starters like Espeon and Umbreon given to Wes at the start. The mix of mature storytelling, console grade 3D battles, and the snagging system gives Pokemon Colosseum a flavor that handheld entries never matched, making it a memorable entry in the franchise.
