Overview

Centipede is a classic arcade-style shoot ’em up game released for the Atari 2600 in 1983. Atari developed and published this home conversion of the popular 1980 arcade hit, which was originally designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg. Players control a small shooter character called the Bug Blaster, who must defend the bottom of the screen from a descending centipede that winds through a field of mushrooms. The goal sounds simple, but the action stays fast and demanding from the first second. Each shot that hits the centipede splits it into smaller segments, creating more targets and more chaos on screen. Mushrooms block bullets and force the centipede to change direction, which adds a layer of strategy to every move. The Atari 2600 version trims the visuals from the arcade original, yet keeps the core feel intact. Bright colors, snappy controls, and constant pressure make this title a standout entry in the early home console library. It remains one of the most recognized shooters of its era.

The Atari 2600 release of Centipede offers single-player and two-player modes, with the second mode letting friends take turns chasing high scores. Players use the joystick or a paddle controller to move the Bug Blaster across the bottom of the playfield and fire upward at the swarm of enemies. Beyond the centipede itself, the game throws spiders, fleas, and scorpions into the mix, each with its own movement pattern and threat level. Spiders dart across the screen and clear mushrooms in their path, while fleas drop straight down and plant fresh mushrooms behind them. Scorpions poison mushrooms they touch, turning the centipede deadly when it reaches them and forcing it to charge straight down. The point values climb steadily as players survive longer waves, and the difficulty ramps up with faster enemies and tighter spaces. Color cycling between rounds gives each stage a fresh look without changing the rules. Centipede on the Atari 2600 captures the tension and replay value of a true arcade classic, and it still rewards quick reflexes today.
