Overview
Crash Bandicoot: Warped is a 3D platformer developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 1. Released in 1998, the game serves as the third entry in the Crash Bandicoot series and stands as one of the console’s most celebrated titles. Players control Crash Bandicoot, and at times his sister Coco, as they travel across time and space to collect crystals and gems scattered across 30 levels. The time travel concept sets this entry apart from its predecessors, sending players into prehistoric jungles, medieval castles, ancient Egyptian tombs, Arabian deserts, and outer space. Each era brings a distinct visual identity and a new set of challenges that keep the gameplay feeling varied. Crash also gains new abilities as he defeats the game’s bosses, including a flying kick, a double jump, and the Fruit Bazooka. These powers make movement more expressive and give players more tools to deal with environmental hazards and enemies throughout every stage.
The game offers a single-player campaign split across five themed warp rooms, each containing six levels and a boss fight. Naughty Dog designed the level variety to go far beyond standard platforming, incorporating motorcycle chases, underwater sequences, biplane dogfights, and snowboard runs into the mix. This keeps every session feeling fresh as players move between completely different styles of play. Collectibles play a central role in the experience, with colored gems, relics earned from time trial runs, and hidden gems rewarding thorough exploration. Time trials add significant replay value, challenging players to blast through levels as fast as possible using crates that pause the clock. The game also lets players take control of Coco in specific stages, giving her a tiger mount and a spaceship to fly. Crash Bandicoot: Warped wraps up the original trilogy with tight controls, excellent level design, and a playful tone throughout. It remains one of the best platformers the PS1 ever produced and a must-play for fans of the genre.
