Overview
G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra is an action shooter released in 2009 by Electronic Arts and developed by Double Helix Games. The title launched alongside the live action film of the same name and brings the conflict between the G.I. Joe team and the Cobra organization to the Nintendo Wii. Players take control of elite soldiers across a series of fast paced missions set in jungles, deserts, frozen bases, and futuristic strongholds. The Wii version uses motion controls for aiming and reloading, giving the shooting a hands on feel that matches the arcade style action. Each character carries unique weapons and special abilities, from heavy machine guns to swords and laser rifles. The Accelerator Suit serves as the central gameplay hook, granting super speed bursts and powerful melee strikes that let players plow through groups of Cobra troopers. The pacing stays high from start to finish, with constant explosions, vehicle chases, and boss fights against villains like Storm Shadow, Baroness, and Destro pulled straight from the toy line and movie.
The game offers a campaign covering sixteen missions split between two main story arcs, letting players follow events from the G.I. Joe perspective and also from Cobra inspired angles. A drop in two player cooperative mode runs through the entire story, with one person controlling a primary Joe and a partner joining as a second hero. Over a dozen playable characters are available, including Duke, Scarlett, Heavy Duty, Snake Eyes, Ripcord, and Roadblock, each with their own combat style and unlockable upgrades. As players complete stages they earn points to spend on weapon improvements, health boosts, and new abilities. Mission variety keeps things fresh through on rail turret sections, tank battles, and stealth segments. Bonus content includes unlockable characters, concept art, and toy biographies that reward exploration. The result is a loud, colorful, and easy to pick up action title aimed at fans of the franchise and younger players who want a straightforward shooter with familiar heroes and over the top set pieces.
