Overview

Raven Software created Hexen: Beyond Heretic as a follow-up to their earlier dark fantasy shooter Heretic, and Software Creations ported the game to the Nintendo 64 in 1997. GT Interactive Software published the N64 version, which brought the bleak and violent world of the Cronos dimension to console players for the first time. Players enter a land where the Serpent Riders, a trio of powerful warlords, have unleashed evil across every corner of the realm. What separates Hexen from other shooters of its era is the choice players make before the game even begins: selecting one of three distinct character classes. The Fighter charges into battle with raw physical power, the Cleric draws on holy and dark forces, and the Mage fires devastating magical attacks. Each class plays differently enough that the game rewards multiple playthroughs. This approach to character variety, combined with dark gothic visuals and an oppressive atmosphere, made Hexen a standout title in the mid-1990s shooter landscape.

Hexen uses a hub-based level structure that gives the game a more open and puzzle-driven feel than most shooters of its time. Each hub connects multiple maps, and players travel back and forth between areas to flip switches, find keys, and open new paths forward. The N64 version supports four-player multiplayer through both cooperative and deathmatch modes, giving players a reason to return well after finishing the solo story. Each of the three classes earns four weapons across the course of the campaign, with the Fighter relying on axes and a powerful fist weapon, the Cleric commanding divine and necrotic tools, and the Mage wielding wands and staves that deal elemental damage at range. The game spans five hub worlds packed with varied environments including swamps, ice caverns, dungeons, and fortresses that keep the level design from growing repetitive. Despite some visual compromises that came with porting to the N64 hardware, Hexen delivers a challenging and rewarding experience that still stands as one of the most ambitious dark fantasy shooters the Nintendo 64 library has to offer.
