Overview
Kirby: Squeak Squad is a side-scrolling action platformer that HAL Laboratory developed and Nintendo published for the Nintendo DS in 2006. The game stars Kirby, the pink, round hero of Dream Land, who sets off on a mission to recover his stolen strawberry shortcake after a group of thieves called the Squeak Squad takes it. Players guide Kirby through eight worlds filled with enemies, obstacles, and hidden treasures. The game builds on the classic Kirby formula by giving Kirby access to over twenty copy abilities, which he gains by inhaling specific enemies. Each ability completely changes his attack style, letting players tackle stages in different ways depending on what power they choose to carry. One standout feature is the chest system, where Kirby can store items and abilities in bubbles on the touch screen for later use, adding a layer of strategy to how players manage their resources throughout each level.
The game spans eight worlds with multiple stages in each, offering a mix of platforming challenges, puzzle rooms, and boss encounters at the end of every world. Players collect treasure chests throughout each stage, and those chests hold copy ability upgrades, rare power-ups, and scrolls that expand what each ability does. Players can also combine certain abilities using the touch screen, creating powered-up versions with stronger attacks and broader effects. A hidden boss waits for those who collect every treasure chest in the game, giving dedicated players extra motivation to comb through every corner of every stage. A wireless download play mode lets two players race through special mini-stages together without each needing their own game card. From start to finish, Kirby: Squeak Squad offers a colorful, well-paced adventure that suits newcomers to the series and longtime fans alike, making it one of the most enjoyable Kirby titles available on the Nintendo DS.
