Mario Kart Double Dash is a kart racing game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the GameCube in 2003. The game stands out from every other entry in the Mario Kart series because of its two-character-per-kart system. Instead of one racer per vehicle, players choose two characters before each race, and both ride the same kart together. One character drives while the other handles items. Players can swap these roles at any time during a race, which adds a layer of strategy not found in other kart racers. Each character pair also carries two unique special items exclusive to that pairing, meaning team selection directly shapes how a race plays out. The roster pulls from across the Mario universe, including familiar faces like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, and Donkey Kong, each paired with a matching partner. The game includes several modes to keep players busy across single and group sessions. Grand Prix mode covers four cups, each with four tracks, spread across three engine class difficulties: 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc. Time Trial lets players chase their best lap and course records, while VS and Battle modes bring the action into direct competition with friends. Battle mode offers two formats, Balloon Battle and Shine Thief, both designed for up to four players on the same screen. The sixteen tracks pull from worlds like Mushroom City, Bowser Castle, Baby Park, and Rainbow Road, each with a distinct visual style and layout. The cooperative element of the two-rider system makes the multiplayer experience feel genuinely different from any other racing game on the platform, and it remains one of the most memorable titles in the GameCube library.
