Overview

Metroid is a side-scrolling action-adventure game released by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986 in Japan and 1987 in North America. Nintendo R&D1 developed the title under the direction of Yoshio Sakamoto and Gunpei Yokoi, with music composed by Hirokazu Tanaka. Players take control of bounty hunter Samus Aran, who lands on the hostile planet Zebes to stop the Space Pirates from weaponizing the parasitic Metroid creatures. The game broke new ground by blending platforming, shooting, and exploration into a single nonlinear world. Instead of moving from level to level, players wander through a sprawling underground labyrinth, searching for power-ups, hidden rooms, and locked passages. The lonely atmosphere, eerie soundtrack, and sense of isolation set Metroid apart from other action games of its era. Its famous twist ending, which reveals Samus as a woman beneath the armor, surprised players and cemented the character as one of gaming’s most iconic protagonists. The title laid the groundwork for the genre later called Metroidvania.

The world of Zebes contains five interconnected regions, including Brinstar, Norfair, Kraid’s Hideout, Ridley’s Hideout, and Tourian. Samus collects upgrades such as the Morph Ball, Bombs, Long Beam, Ice Beam, Wave Beam, Varia Suit, and Screw Attack, each one opening new paths and combat options. Energy Tanks raise her health ceiling, while Missiles let her break through tough doors and defeat stronger enemies. The game uses a password save system, allowing players to record progress and return to the planet later. Two bosses, Kraid and Ridley, guard the entrances to the final zone, where Mother Brain waits inside a heavily defended base. Skilled players who finish the game quickly are rewarded with alternate endings that show Samus in different outfits, adding replay value. Metroid set the template for exploration-driven design, atmospheric storytelling, and character-defining secrets that shaped countless games afterward. It remains a foundational classic that every action fan should experience.
