Overview

Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness is a role-playing game released by Nintendo for the GameCube in 2005. Genius Sonority developed the title as a direct sequel to Pokemon Colosseum, set five years after the events of the first game in the Orre region. Players take control of a young trainer named Michael who must stop the criminal organization Cipher from corrupting Pokemon and turning them into Shadow Pokemon. The core gameplay focuses on catching these Shadow Pokemon from enemy trainers during battles, then purifying them back to their normal state. This concept sets the game apart from the main handheld Pokemon titles, where players catch wild Pokemon in tall grass. The Orre region features a desert setting with cities, labs, and battle facilities instead of traditional routes. Battles play out in full 3D with detailed Pokemon models, which was a treat for fans used to the sprite-based visuals on the Game Boy Advance. The title remains the only main-series console Pokemon RPG with a true story mode.

The game offers a lengthy story mode that takes around 30 hours to complete, much longer than its predecessor Colosseum. Players catch 83 different Shadow Pokemon throughout the adventure, including the new Shadow Lugia known as XD001. A purification chamber system lets trainers speed up the process of returning Shadow Pokemon to their original state using strategic placement of regular Pokemon. The Battle Mode includes single battles, double battles, and a Battle Bingo mini-game for extra challenges. Multiplayer support comes through GameCube link cables, allowing battles against friends with custom teams built from purified Pokemon. The game also connects to Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald via the GBA-GameCube link cable, so trainers can transfer Pokemon between platforms. Boss fights against Cipher Admins and the final showdown with Grand Master Greevil deliver memorable moments. With its mature tone, deeper story, and unique Shadow Pokemon mechanic, Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness stands as one of the most distinctive entries in the entire Pokemon franchise.
