River Raid is a vertically scrolling shooter released by Activision in 1982 for the Atari 2600. Carol Shaw designed and programmed the game, making her one of the first women to create a major commercial video game. Players pilot a fighter jet up the River of No Return, blasting enemy helicopters, fuel depots, ships, and bridges while staying within the narrow waterway. The jet burns fuel constantly, so pilots must fly over fuel tanks to refill the tank before running dry. Crashing into the riverbanks, hitting an enemy, or running out of fuel costs a life. The procedural map generation was a clever technical trick that packed a long, varied river into just 4 KB of cartridge memory. The constant tension between shooting fuel depots for points and saving them for refueling gives the game a strategic edge that simple shooters lacked. The game offers single player and two player alternating modes, with difficulty switches on the console that change jet speed for beginners and veterans. Each bridge destroyed marks the start of a new section of the river, acting as a checkpoint and a score multiplier moment. As players push deeper, the river splits into branching paths, narrows into tight gaps, and fills with denser enemy formations. Jets, tankers, and hot air balloons appear in later sections to keep the threat level rising. Scoring rewards careful shooting since players earn points for every target destroyed, including fuel depots that they might need for survival. The minimalist sound design, with its iconic engine hum and explosion blasts, adds to the tense atmosphere of each run. River Raid sold over a million cartridges and became one of the best selling games on the Atari 2600.
