Overview
Soul Blade is a weapons-based fighting game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation 1, released in 1996 in Japan and 1997 in Western markets. The game serves as the first entry in what would become the long-running Soul series, later known as SoulCalibur. Unlike most fighting games of its era that focused on hand-to-hand combat, Soul Blade puts a weapon in every fighter’s hands, building its entire combat system around swords, axes, axes, spears, and other historical armaments. Each of the ten playable characters comes from a different part of the world and carries a distinct weapon type that shapes how they move, attack, and defend in battle. The game follows warriors hunting for Soul Edge, a legendary cursed sword with immense power. This weapon-centric design gave the game a grounded, weighty feel that stood apart from faster, more acrobatic fighters of the same period and helped it build a dedicated following among fighting game fans.
Soul Blade offers several game modes to keep players engaged across both single-player and multiplayer sessions. The main draw is Edge Master Mode, a single-player journey where players travel across a world map, fighting opponents in different locations to collect weapons and grow stronger. Each character has a unique storyline and ending, giving players a reason to complete the mode with every fighter on the roster. The game tracks weapon durability during fights, meaning weapons can break mid-match and force players to adapt their strategy on the fly. Versus mode supports two-player local matches for head-to-head competition. The roster of ten warriors includes Mitsurugi, Sophitia, Siegfried, Li Long, and others, each with a deep move set tied to their weapon class. Soul Blade delivered a fresh take on the fighting genre with its weapon mechanics and worldwide character roster, making it one of the most memorable PlayStation fighting games of its generation.
