Nintendo developed and published Super Mario 64 DS, a 3D platformer for the Nintendo DS that launched alongside the system in 2004. The game takes the beloved N64 classic Super Mario 64 from 1996 and rebuilds it from the ground up for the dual-screen handheld, adding new content, updated visuals, and a fresh look throughout every course. Players collect Power Stars scattered across Bowser's castle and its many themed worlds, working toward rescuing Princess Peach from the villain's grip. What sets this version apart from the original is its expanded character roster. Where the N64 game offered only Mario, this remake adds Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario as fully playable characters, each with unique abilities and a dedicated set of character-exclusive stars to find and collect. The total Power Star count rises from 120 to 150, with 30 brand-new stars that Nintendo designed specifically for this release. The DS touchscreen and built-in microphone connect to mini-games and select in-world moments, giving this remake a distinct identity that goes well beyond a simple port of the original game.

Super Mario 64 DS runs its main adventure in single-player mode, where players pick their character at the save file screen before each session. The game starts with Yoshi as the only option, and players must find and free Mario, Luigi, and Wario from inside the castle to add each one to the playable roster. Each hero handles differently: Mario covers all skill areas well, Luigi runs fast and catches big air, Wario smashes metal boxes that other characters cannot break, and Yoshi swallows enemies to spit or blow them as projectiles. The world spans 15 main courses and several bonus stages, covering environments from a haunted mansion and a fiery volcanic landscape to an underwater bay, a sandy desert, and a cold snowy mountain. A wireless multiplayer mode for up to four players lets friends race through levels or compete in star-collecting battles. The game also packs 36 touch-screen mini-games that use the DS stylus and microphone. All of it comes together as a well-rounded package that improves on the original in nearly every area and holds up strongly as a must-play title for the platform.
