Turtles in Time
Overview
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time is a side-scrolling beat ’em up released by Konami for the Super Nintendo in 1992. The game is a home port of the popular arcade title of the same name, and many fans consider this SNES version the definitive edition thanks to extra stages, bosses, and modes added for the console release. Players pick one of the four turtles, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, or Michelangelo, and fight through waves of Foot Soldiers and Krang’s minions across different periods of history. The story kicks off when Shredder steals the Statue of Liberty on live TV, then drags the heroes through a time warp that scatters them across prehistoric eras, pirate ships, the Wild West, and the distant future. Each turtle has a slightly different speed and reach, giving the cast real personality. The bright cartoon visuals, catchy soundtrack, and snappy controls captured the spirit of the TMNT animated series and made the title a standout in the SNES library.
Combat stays simple yet satisfying. Players punch, jump, and perform a special move that clears nearby enemies at the cost of a small health hit. A signature feature lets the turtles grab Foot Soldiers and hurl them straight at the screen, a trick that returns during boss fights against Shredder himself. The SNES port adds a Time Trial mode, a versus mode for two players, and exclusive bosses like Bebop and Rocksteady riding hoverboards. Two players can team up locally and share lives, which turns the action into a chaotic couch co-op classic. Ten stages move briskly from the streets of New York to dinosaur swamps, pirate galleons, sewer surf races, and a final showdown in the year 2100. Difficulty options let casual players relax while veterans chase high scores on harder settings. With tight pacing, memorable music by Mutsuhiko Izumi, and pure cartoon charm, Turtles in Time remains one of the most beloved brawlers ever made for the Super Nintendo.
