Overview
Wario Land 4 is a side-scrolling platformer developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance in 2001. Players control Wario, Nintendo’s greedy anti-hero, as he ventures into the Golden Pyramid after hearing rumors of a sleeping princess and hidden treasure inside. The game stands apart from most platformers by centering its design around Wario’s unique body-based attacks and transformation abilities. Rather than jumping on enemies, Wario tackles them head-on, shoulder bashes through obstacles, and uses his large frame as a weapon. What truly sets the game apart is its boss rush exit mechanic. After collecting four treasures from each stage, a timer starts and Wario must race back to the entrance at full speed while the level shifts and changes around him. This urgency-fueled dash replaces the typical backtracking of most platformers with something genuinely exciting. The combination of exploration, enemy combat, and timed escape sequences gives the game a design unlike anything else on the platform.
Wario Land 4 organizes its content across four themed worlds called passages, each containing three regular stages and one boss battle at the end. The passages carry distinct visual themes ranging from ancient ruins and spooky mansions to scorching deserts and icy caverns, making each area feel like a different experience. Wario collects gems and coins throughout stages, and a grading system scores each run based on the time taken and the number of treasures found. The game also features a surprising range of enemy-triggered transformations, where specific hits turn Wario into zombie Wario, fat Wario, snowball Wario, and several other states that players must use creatively to open new paths. A sound player and a music CD collection give the game extra replay value between sessions. No multiplayer mode appears in the game, but the single-player campaign delivers enough depth and variety to stay compelling from start to finish. Wario Land 4 remains one of the strongest platformers in the Game Boy Advance library.
