Overview
General Chaos is a real-time strategy and action game developed by Game Refuge Inc. and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis in 1994. The game puts players in command of a small squad of soldiers locked in a series of military skirmishes against a rival general. Players choose their team before each battle, selecting from five different soldier types: Brutes, Commandos, Medics, Pyros, and Grenadiers. Each unit carries unique weapons and abilities, giving players room to build squads suited to different combat situations. What sets General Chaos apart from other strategy games of its era is the balance between tactical planning and direct action. Players can switch between a top-down command view and direct character control at any moment during battle, making every fight feel both strategic and immediate. The mix of humor, cartoon-style visuals, and genuine tactical depth gave the game a distinctive identity on the Genesis and kept it in conversations about the platform’s best multiplayer titles for years.
General Chaos supports both single-player and two-player modes, with head-to-head multiplayer serving as the clear highlight of the package. Two players face off directly, each commanding their own squad across a variety of battlefield maps that include forests, beachheads, and open plains. Before each match, both sides draft a five-soldier squad from the available classes, building in a satisfying pre-battle decision layer. The Brute carries a machine gun and absorbs punishment well; the Pyro unleashes flamethrower bursts; the Grenadier lobs explosives at range; the Commando moves fast and strikes hard; and the Medic rushes to revive fallen teammates on the spot. Keeping your Medic alive becomes a priority as battles stretch on. The single-player campaign sends players through a ladder of increasingly tough enemy generals, each with a different preferred squad composition. General Chaos rewards smart squad drafting and quick thinking in equal measure, making it one of the most entertaining and replayable experiences in the Genesis library.
