Overview
Sonic 3D Blast is an action platformer developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Sega for the Mega Drive and Genesis in 1996. The game marked a significant shift in the Sonic series by presenting stages from an isometric perspective rather than the classic side-scrolling view fans knew from earlier titles. Sonic moves through large, pre-rendered environments across several themed worlds, each filled with enemies called Flickies, small colourful birds that Robotnik has trapped inside badniks. The core objective in each stage is to defeat enemies, collect the Flickies they release, and carry a set number of them to a goal ring before progressing. This collect-and-deliver structure replaces the straightforward sprint gameplay of earlier Sonic games, giving the experience a slower, more exploratory feel. The isometric view was a bold creative choice that set the game apart from anything else in the series up to that point, making it a genuinely distinct entry.
The game includes five main worlds, each with three acts and a bonus stage, plus a series of boss encounters against Robotnik at the end of every world. Players can collect Chaos Emeralds by finding hidden special stage rings scattered across levels, which lead to pinball-style bonus rounds. Rings serve the usual protective purpose, and extra lives can be earned by accumulating them in quantity. A two-player mode is absent, as the game focuses entirely on the single-player journey through its themed zones, including Rusty Ruin, Spring Stadium, Diamond Dust and Volcano Valley. Each zone carries its own visual identity and set of obstacles that demand careful movement given the isometric grid layout. The Saturn version released alongside this Mega Drive edition adds improved visuals and a bonus true 3D special stage, but the Mega Drive version stands as a solid and memorable chapter in the Sonic catalogue with plenty of charm across its colourful worlds.
